Slick Fontaine is a fictional Detroit-born music persona blending funk, soul, R&B, rap, spoken storytelling, gospel and jazz influence, and Blaxploitation-inspired cinematic scoring without becoming a costume parody. In canon, Solomon Franklin Fontaine came up around Detroit auto work, church, tailoring, Cadillacs, and live nightlife, fronted an early-1990s band called The Night Ledger, walked away after a bad rights-and-management deal, and spent years outside public music. In 2026, modern independent tools, AI-enabled media, a phone experience, and Crooked Staff Records give Slick a direct route to the audience — no fake vintage fame required.
Slick Fontaine moves like he has been in the room longer than everybody else, even when he just walked in.
The fictional Detroit-born music persona blends live-band funk, soul, R&B, rap, gospel and jazz vocabulary, spoken storytelling, and the widescreen tension of classic crime-soul cinema. The visual world is black Cadillac paint, wet Detroit pavement, tailored wool, deep red, gold, velvet, the Ace of Diamonds, and a ruby-red diamond-shaped ring engraved KEEP YOUR HAND STEADY.
But the character is built to be more than a 1970s reference. In Slick's canon, Solomon Franklin Fontaine was born in Detroit in 1972, raised on the Old West Side around automotive work, church, paperwork, neighborhood business, and people who understood that looking sharp was not the same thing as being rich. He learned tailoring from Lucien Baptiste, nightlife business from Celestine “CeCe” Monroe, and storytelling discipline from an English teacher named Mrs. Odessa Bell. In the early 1990s he fronted The Night Ledger, a small live act that never became the fake legendary band a lesser mythology would claim it was. A bad production/management deal helped end the run.
Slick's 2026 arrival is the point. AI-enabled visuals and voice, direct audience interaction, independent release tools, and Crooked Staff Records allow the character to exist across records, videos, phone calls, websites, interviews, and avatars while remaining transparent that Slick is fictional. The mythology is detailed. The music is the reason for it.
“I ain't back. I'm finally on time.” — Slick Fontaine
